Louisiana State University, or LSU for short, is a public coeducational university located in Baton Rouge, which is the capital and the 2nd largest city in the US state of Louisiana, located in East Baton Rouge Parish, having a population estimated at a number of more than 220 000 inhabitants. The Baton Rouge metropolitan area and Pierre Part micropolitan area has a number of more than 797 000 people, living within its limits, fact which makes it the 64th largest urban area in USA.
LSU was founded in 1853, in the area known today as Pineville, LA, first starting under the name of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy, the current LSU campus being dedicated in 1926, occupying 650 acres on the banks of the Mississippi River. LSU is the highest institution of higher education in the state, also being the flagship institution of the Louisiana State University System.
The university offers its students various educational in numerous fields of study, through 17 schools and colleges, which include the School of Agriculture, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, E.J. Ourso College of Business and Louisiana State University School of Medicine. The US News and World Report placed LSU on the 128th place in the national universities category, Louisiana State also being named 88th best public university in the nation, by Forbes magazine. LSU is also considered to be the 16th most popular university in the nation, along with other regional universities such as The University of Georgia, The University of Alabama and The University of Texas.
The athletic teams from LSU are known as the Tigers, who compete in 20 varsity sports (9 men’s and 11 women’s), in the NCAA, Southern Conference, being perhaps best known for their achievements in football, in which they won 3 national championship, in ’58, 2003 and 2007. In 2003, they also won their second BCS National Championship, their 3rd National Championship, in 2007. Their mascot is Mike the Tiger, which was named after Mike Chambers, who was LSU’s athletic trainer in 1936.
